Until April 29, the independent cultural space Smilga will host the exhibition Ouroboros by contemporary jewellery artist Una Mikuda, which offers an insight into her creative world, where art, design, and body become one. Una views jewellery as «body objects», and tomorrow, on April 5, the exhibition will host a contemporary dance performance that will reveal a new perspective on the interaction of jewellery and the body in movement. In the Nice Touch section, the artist talks about an accessory that has become an integral part of her day-to-day life and creative process.

Nice Touch Editorial April 4, 2025

«I always have a Coucou Suzette hair clip with me — in my bag or in my pocket, clipped to my shirt lapel or on the strap of my bag. And I have not one but five! The one that comes with me on my daily errands depends on my outfit or my mood. The hair clip is not only a handy tool for getting my hair out of the way while I work but also often comes in handy during the jewellery modelling process when I need to quickly fasten different materials together. Now and then it also becomes a table decoration and often serves as a stress-relieving tool by being opened and closed, opened and closed.»

Una Mikuda is one of the most notable contemporary jewellery artists in Latvia, whose works reflect philosophical and aesthetic reflections on the meaning of jewellery and its relationship with the body and space. Una received her master’s degree in metal design from the Art Academy of Latvia, having been awarded the Ināra Tetereva Scholarship in Art. She also studied jewellery design at the Erasmus programme at Lahti University of Applied Sciences in Finland. Una is a member of the Latvian Jewellery Art Association and has participated in several international projects, as well as various group exhibitions and competitions. Una runs her own jewellery brand, Una Mikuda Jewelry, and her works are also in the collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Riga.

Una’s solo exhibition Ouroboros is on view at the cultural space Smilga (Eduarda Smiļģa iela 34A, Riga) until April 29. The exhibition is accompanied by a varied programme of events — tomorrow, April 5, at 13.00, the public is invited to attend a contemporary dance performance developed by choreographer Agate Bankava together with the dancers.
